Free Cerveza is the ultimate oasis to get away from the big city bustle and let loose in a unique and secluded setting. We consider ourself somewhat of a summer camp for adults. Backpacker friendly!
What to do here?
Every morning we’ve got a fun activity running for you guys! These activities include: yoga classes, sunrise hikes, and Sunrise Paddle Board tours. To keep things interesting, we try to run a fun game or activity every afternoon/evening. We like to hold beer pong tournaments, quiz nights, beer olympics, costume parties, bonfire nights and so much more! Some afternoons we’ll even have special activities - like craft beer tastings or cooking classes with our local kitchen crew. Just check with our awesome staff to see what’s on for the nights that you’re with us!

Our Story
Free Cerveza
We’re nestled on the incredible shores of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala - complete with our own private bar & restaurant, docks to tan & swim off of, and a million and one daily and nightly activities for your enjoyment! All of our accommodation is glamping - we have cozy tents & our open-air treehouse. But don’t worry, everything is fitted out with comfy mattresses & electricity! We love to keep our guests busy and entertained, so don’t hesitate to ask our awesome staff what activities we have lined up during your stay! In the summer of 2016, Dani and Miguel Orozco decided it was time to bring a refreshing social concept to Lake Atitlan’s backpacking scene. After months of Whatsappin’, Pinterest Boards and Google Sheets, they agreed to buy the land, build it fast and give away free beer. In Feb 2017, with only 3 weeks of cash in the bank, 5 Danish travelers asked to be our first guests when we weren’t even open. Miguel and Dani huddled for 5 minutes and hesitantly agreed. That February night the beer started flowing. Free Cerveza is lakeside social glamping that sparks a community and connection. Over the years, a few other wandering travelers have decided to call the property home and move our mission forward. Hundreds of volunteers and dozens of staff have all left their mark to deliver the best backpacking stay in Guatemala. As of 2020 - Dani, Stephen and Chris continue to create as Miguel makes room for the next generation of ownership to stir magic into the lake. One of the primary goals when setting up Free Cerveza was to ensure that the impact it made was absolutely minimal. We do this by pumping in lake water for our showers, using LED lighting, and natural cleaners - but most importantly, by utilizing our eco toilet system. This system (although sometimes a little smelly) makes use of compost system, allowing us to fertilize our beautiful flowers and gardens. It also has a gray water element which waters our property and keeps it looking lush and green. So in a sense, you could say we all leave a little piece of ourselves here.
